Buy Steam games without taxes in Argentina using a virtual wallet

A Steam game that costs 10 dollars in the store can end up being much more expensive when you pay for it with an Argentine credit card, due to the taxes and withholdings applied to every international purchase.

Here we tell you how this extra cost works and how gift cards purchased with a digital wallet can prevent it.

Download the belo app and check the available Steam gift cards based on your account and current conditions.

Why a 10-dollar game can cost you double

A game that Steam lists at 10 dollars ends up costing close to 20 when you pay for it with a credit or debit card issued in Argentina.

The difference does not come from the exchange rate, but from two taxes that are stacked on top of every international card purchase.

The first is the VAT on digital services, which adds 21% to the product price. The second is the withholding on account of Income Tax and Personal Assets Tax (RG 4815 of AFIP), which adds another 30% to the total amount of the transaction.

Depending on the province and the payment method, additional charges such as Stamp Duty or Gross Income Withholding may apply.

Surcharges that accumulate on top of the base price

  • VAT on digital services represents an additional 21% on top of the product price.

  • The withholding on account of Income Tax and Personal Assets Tax (RG 4815) adds 30% to the total amount of the transaction.

  • The exchange rate spread of bank cards makes the conversion more expensive, because they convert to the official dollar with a margin that varies depending on the issuing entity.

  • In some provinces, extra charges such as Stamp Duty or Gross Income Withholding may appear.

These percentages are those in effect at the time of publishing this guide and may change; it is advisable to check the updated regulations before purchasing. The combined surcharge can exceed 50% on top of the base price, before applying the exchange rate.

Bank cards convert to the official dollar plus a spread that varies depending on the issuing entity, making each Steam purchase end up costing almost double what you see in the store.

What many gamers discover late is that these surcharges do not depend on the game or Steam, but on the payment method. Changing the way you pay can eliminate most of those costs. You can check the payment options available in belo.

The method that bypasses the withholdings

The 30% withholding exists because AFIP applies it to foreign currency transactions made with cards.

When you buy a gift card for Steam in pesos from a digital wallet, the transaction is not processed as an international card purchase.

It is a local purchase of a prepaid code, and that code is later redeemed within Steam to get balance on the platform. This difference in the payment mechanism changes the entire tax picture.

Steam gift cards purchased through digital wallets do not carry the 30% withholding or the VAT on digital services that does apply when the transaction is registered as international consumption.

According to the regulations in effect at the time of publication, the applicable surcharge for this method is 0%.

If you want to verify how much you save before buying, Steamcito is a tool that calculates the final price of any Steam game for each payment method, with updated taxes and the current dollar exchange rate.

Comparing the card price versus the gift card price shows the difference in concrete numbers.

Comparison of payment methods

Payment method · VAT on digital services · RG 4815 Withholding

Argentine credit or debit card · 21% · 30%

MEP Dollar (savings account in dollars) · 21% · 0%

Gift card purchased with digital wallet · 0% · 0%

Paying with dollars from a savings account in dollars (MEP dollar) reduces the cost, although in that case you still pay the 21% VAT on digital services. Gift cards eliminate that charge too, making them the most favorable option of the three.

How to buy a gift card and redeem it on Steam

At belo, we designed a section called Virtual Stores that connects with a catalog of gift cards, including Steam.

The process starts by funding your account with Argentine pesos or cryptocurrencies, and from the main screen you access Virtual Stores to search for "Steam".

You select the amount you want to load, add it to the cart and confirm the payment. Although processing is done through Bitrefill, you do not need to have Bitcoin or do any manual conversion.

The deduction is automatically applied to the balance you have in belo, whether in pesos or crypto. Once confirmed, you receive the gift card code by email.

Steps to redeem the code on Steam

  1. Log in to your Steam account from the app or from store.steampowered.com.

  2. Access the "Account" section within your profile.

  3. Select "Redeem a Steam Wallet Code or Gift Card".

  4. Paste the code you received by email and confirm.

  5. The balance appears credited to your account and you can use it to buy any game on the platform.

The cost difference between this method and paying with a bank card can reach 20% or more, depending on the current exchange rate.

The same mechanism works for other platforms where gift cards are available in the Virtual Stores catalog.

What can go wrong (and what is good to know)

The taxes and charges applied today can change without prior notice. AFIP and provincial agencies update rates and withholdings frequently, and a method that has no surcharges today might have them tomorrow.

Each user is responsible for clarifying the current regulations at the time of purchase. AstroPay is another digital wallet that legacy users often find in search results related to Steam payments.

Each service has its own fees, exchange rates, and limits, so it is advisable to compare the real final cost, including the price of the game, the cost of funding the wallet, and any conversion fees, before choosing.

Steam does not prohibit the use of gift cards, but it can restrict accounts it detects operating from regions inconsistent with their profile. As long as you use your Argentine account and redeem gift cards valid for your region, the risk is low.

What is best avoided is buying gift cards from unverified websites or sources of doubtful origin, because Steam can invalidate codes obtained in an irregular manner.

Gift card purchases made through regulated wallets are recorded, which means you have support in case of any claim.

Buying codes through informal channels removes that protection and adds an unjustified risk when legitimate alternatives already offer considerable savings.

Frequently asked questions about buying Steam games without taxes in Argentina using a digital wallet

Do Steam gift cards have any amount limit per purchase?

The available amounts depend on the catalog offered by each digital wallet at the time of purchase. Values may vary based on provider availability, so it is best to review options inside the app before funding your account.

Can I use these gift cards if my Steam account is configured in another country?

Steam links codes to specific regions, so a gift card purchased for Argentina may not be compatible with an account configured in another region. Using your Argentine account with gift cards valid for Argentina is the way to avoid any conflict with the platform's terms.

What happens if the gift card code does not work when redeeming it?

If you purchased the gift card through a regulated wallet like belo, you have support from the provider to make a claim. It is precisely this traceability that distinguishes official channels from informal ones, where no guarantee exists.

Does the saving also apply to DLC purchases or only to full games?

The balance accumulated on Steam is valid for any purchase within the platform, including DLC, expansions, full games, and other content. Once the code is redeemed, the balance remains available without category restrictions.

Can I combine gift card balance with other payment methods on Steam?

Steam allows you to combine your account balance with a payment card when the balance is not enough to cover the total purchase. However, the portion charged to the card would be subject to the usual taxes, so it is highly recommended to load the exact amount you need.
