How to charge a foreign client if you are Venezuelan and live in Colombia

How to charge an international client if you are Venezuelan and live in Colombia

How to charge a client from abroad if you are Venezuelan and live in Colombia

You finish a project for a client in the United States, send the invoice, and then the question arises that no generic tutorial answers well: how to charge from abroad as a Venezuelan in Colombia, with what document, by what means, and without the money getting trapped in an unexpected verification.

Choosing poorly can cost you between 5% and 15% of the amount in commissions, unfavorable conversions, or days of waiting while the platform asks for papers you don't have.

Your immigration document defines which doors open

The most frequent doubt for any Venezuelan freelance in Colombia is whether they can receive international payments without a Colombian ID. The answer is yes, but the range of options changes according to your status.

With a current PEP or PPT you can open accounts in some Colombian banks and verify yourself on platforms like Payoneer, although not all banks accept these documents for accounts in dollars or to receive transfers from abroad.

If you have a foreign ID card (cédula de extranjería), the landscape widens because most financial entities treat it as a valid primary document.

What many discover late is that digital platforms and virtual wallets usually have more flexible verification requirements than traditional banks.

Payoneer, for example, accepts a valid Venezuelan passport combined with proof of residence in Colombia to open a receiving account in dollars.

Crypto wallets allow operating with the identity document of the country of origin, provided you can prove residence.

This flexibility makes them the first real option to receive payments as a migrant, especially while you process permanent Colombian documentation.

Payment routes according to the origin of the payment

The origin of the money determines which is the most efficient route.

If your client is in the United States and can make an ACH transfer, platforms like Payoneer allow you to receive in your US virtual account at no receiving cost, with a withdrawal fee of around 2% when you move the funds to your Colombian bank account.

A direct SWIFT transfer to a bank in Colombia can add between 25 and 50 dollars in intermediary bank fees, plus the conversion margin of the receiving bank.

When the payment comes from Europe via SEPA, the logic is similar. SEPA moves euros within the euro zone at low costs, but for that money to reach Colombia it needs to be converted, and there each intermediary takes their cut.

Payoneer accepts SEPA payments in euros, which reduces one link in the chain.

For smaller amounts or recurring payments, USDT is an alternative that many Venezuelan freelancers in Colombia already use daily. Your client buys USDT and sends it to your wallet in minutes, regardless of whether they are in Berlin or Miami.

The network fee on Tron is usually less than a dollar, and you convert to Colombian pesos through a local exchange or P2P when the exchange rate suits you.

The weak point is that you need your client to be willing to operate with crypto, something that does not always happen with large companies.

Wallets like belo, which already operate in Argentina and Colombia, aim precisely to resolve that friction for those who need to withdraw dollars quickly and cheaply and move funds without depending on a traditional bank, with automatic conversion and no hidden fees.

It is advisable to check the current conditions within the app and if your documentation meets the requirements, since some specific functions, such as the receiving account in dollars, have specific restrictions depending on the country that issued your document.

How to prepare each payment so it doesn't get blocked

Most of the KYC blocks suffered by Venezuelans in Colombia do not occur due to lack of documents, but because of sending incomplete or inconsistent documentation.

Before sharing your payment details with a client, it is advisable to have the following elements ready:

  • Your valid passport or immigration document, in good condition and within its validity date

  • A proof of address in Colombia less than three months old, such as a utility bill

  • The verified profile on Payoneer or the wallet you use, completed in advance and not when the payment is already on its way

What you ask of the payer also matters. If your client is going to make a bank transfer, you need them to include your exact name as it appears on the receiving account, the payment concept (for example "design services, invoice 045"), and to confirm from which bank and country the transfer is sent.

This information prevents the receiving bank from freezing funds due to lack of traceability. The decision between USDT and an ACH or SEPA route depends on three specific variables: the amount, the urgency, and the client's willingness.

For payments under 500 dollars where you need the money the same day, USDT wins for speed and cost.

To charge from abroad for amounts greater than 2,000 dollars from formal companies that issue invoices, ACH through Payoneer offers tax traceability and a clean record that simplifies your accounting situation in Colombia.

When the payment comes from Europe, SEPA combined with an euro receiving account reduces conversion layers.

Having more than one route configured before you need it is what really makes the difference.

Verifying accounts, completing KYC processes, and testing with small amounts takes days, and those days feel eternal when a client has already sent the payment and you have nowhere to receive it.

Download the belo app and check how to charge from abroad according to your account and current conditions.

Frequently asked questions about how to charge a client from abroad if you are Venezuelan and live in Colombia

Can I use Payoneer with a Venezuelan passport if I live in Colombia?

Yes. Payoneer accepts a valid Venezuelan passport combined with proof of residence in Colombia that is less than three months old.

It is advisable to complete the verification before your client sends the first payment, to avoid delays during the KYC process.

What immigration document do I need to receive international payments in Colombia?

With a current PEP, PPT, or foreign ID (cédula de extranjería) you can access most digital platforms and some banks. The foreign ID opens more doors because most financial entities treat it as a valid primary document.

Crypto wallets usually accept a Venezuelan passport directly, which makes them an accessible option while you process permanent Colombian documentation.

How much do I lose in fees if I receive a direct SWIFT transfer to Colombia?

A direct SWIFT transfer can cost you between 25 and 50 dollars in intermediary bank fees, plus the conversion margin applied by the receiving bank.

Using a virtual account in Payoneer to receive ACH from the United States reduces that cost to around 2% only at the time of withdrawal.

How safe is it to charge in USDT as a freelancer?

USDT is a stablecoin pegged to the dollar, so it is not exposed to the volatility of other cryptocurrencies. The main risk is not the currency itself, but the wallet you use to receive it: it is advisable to choose platforms with a good reputation and established KYC processes.

The conversion to Colombian pesos is done via a local exchange or P2P when the exchange rate is convenient for you.

What information should I ask my client for so the transfer does not get blocked?

Ask them to include your exact name as it appears on the receiving account, the payment concept with invoice reference, and the confirmation of the bank and country from which the transfer is sent.

This data allows the receiving bank to identify the origin and destination without the need to freeze the funds due to lack of traceability.
