How to open a digital account in Colombia as a Venezuelan

Asking for a Colombian identity card that you do not yet have is the most common wall encountered by Venezuelans looking to open an account in Colombia.

Here we tell you how to open a digital account with your Venezuelan document, how the registration works step-by-step, and what to do if the verification fails.

Download the belo app and check how to open your account according to your document and current conditions.

Opening an account as a Venezuelan no longer depends on a bank

Three out of four Venezuelans living in Colombia hit the same wall when trying to open a bank account for Venezuelans in Colombia: they were asked for a Colombian identity card that they did not yet have, or a credit history that is impossible to build without a prior account.

This vicious cycle left thousands of people operating only in cash, paying high commissions at remittance agencies, and without access to digital dollars like USDT.

What changed in recent years was the emergence of financial apps that verify identity using documents from the country of origin, without requiring a link to the Colombian banking system.

A digital account for Venezuelan migrants can be opened from a cell phone in minutes, allows sending and receiving stablecoins, and works with the Venezuelan identity card or a valid Venezuelan passport.

For those who already have a formalized immigration status, the Colombian citizenship card, Colombian passport, and residence permit are also accepted.

How registration works in a financial app

The complete process takes between 8 and 15 minutes depending on the connection quality and having the document on hand.

At belo, we designed the flow so that people from different countries can verify themselves without relying on local documentation. This is what the path looks like from download to the first transaction.

Steps to complete the registration

  1. Download the app from Google Play or the App Store and create an account with your email and an active phone number.

  2. Select your country of residence (Colombia, in this case) and choose the type of document you are going to verify yourself with. If you have a valid Venezuelan identity card, select it directly. The Venezuelan passport and Colombian residence permit also appear on the list.

  3. Take photos of the front and back of your document, making sure there are no reflections or cropped edges.

  4. Record the video selfie following the on-screen instructions (usually turning your head or blinking). This step validates that the person registering is the same as the one on the document, and it is mandatory to complete verification.

  5. Wait for approval, which is usually resolved in less than 24 hours, although in many cases it is approved in a matter of minutes. Once approved, you can start operating with USDT and other stablecoins from the international virtual wallet.

The minimum age requirement is 18 years old at the time of registration.

Buying and sending USDT with a Venezuelan document

Andrés is a Venezuelan designer, lives in Medellín, and gets paid for freelance work in dollars. Before opening his digital account, he depended on an intermediary who charged him between 5% and 8% for each transfer to Venezuela.

After verifying himself with his Venezuelan identity card, he started receiving USDT directly into his wallet, converting them when needed, and sending remittances to his family through international transfers that arrive in minutes and without fees.

The flow to buy USDT within the app depends on the funding method available in each country, which can include transfers from other wallets or cryptocurrency deposits.

Once you have a balance in USDT, sending to another user or to an account abroad works from the main screen by selecting "Transfer", choosing the destination, and confirming the amount.

The app automatically converts to the recipient's local currency if the transfer is sent to a bank account, which means Andrés's family in Venezuela receives bolivars directly.

What to do when verification fails

The most frequent rejection during registration occurs due to document photos with poor lighting, cropped edges, or flash reflections on the laminated plastic card.

It is best to take the photo on a dark, flat surface, with indirect natural light, without using the phone's flash.

If the rejection states that the document is not legible, check that it has not expired, because most financial apps do not accept expired documents even if the person is identifiable.

Another common reason for rejection is that the video selfie does not match the photo on the document, which can happen if you wear sunglasses, hats, or if the lighting distorts your features.

Record the video in a well-lit environment, with your face uncovered and looking directly at the camera.

If after two attempts the verification is still not approved, contact the app support with screenshots of the error messages so the team can review it manually.

Security practices from day one

  • Activate two-factor authentication (2FA) as soon as you finish registration, because this extra step prevents anyone from accessing your account even if they get your password.

  • Never share your recovery phrase or your passwords via text message or email, as no legitimate support team will ever ask for them.

  • If you receive a link that supposedly takes you to the app but it came through an unofficial channel, ignore it, because phishing scams frequently target new users who cannot yet distinguish real communications from fake ones.

Opening an account as a Venezuelan in Colombia with a financial app for Venezuelans always works as long as you use a document from the official list and follow the verification steps without skipping the video selfie.

The digital dollars are just 15 minutes away from the cell phone you already have in your hand. Download the belo app and check the current conditions according to your account.

Frequently asked questions about opening a digital account in Colombia as a Venezuelan

Can I open a digital account in Colombia if my Venezuelan ID card is about to expire?

Most financial apps require the document to be valid at the time of registration. If your Venezuelan ID card is close to expiring or has already expired, the system will reject it even if your face is identifiable, so it is better to verify yourself with your Venezuelan passport if it has a longer validity.

How long does it take for identity verification to be approved?

Verification is usually completed in minutes when the document photos and video selfie meet the quality requirements. In cases requiring manual review, the usual maximum timeframe is 24 hours.

What documents does the app accept if I already have Colombian residency?

Those who have a formalized immigration status can verify themselves with a Colombian identity card, Colombian passport, or valid residence permit, in addition to the original Venezuelan documents.

Are there fees for transferring USDT to Venezuela?

Transfers between users within the same app generally have no commission. The cost may vary if the transfer is sent to an external bank account, as in that case the app converts the balance to the recipient's local currency.

Is it safe to store USDT in a digital wallet?

Yes, as long as you activate two-factor authentication and do not share your recovery phrase with anyone. Phishing scams mainly target new users, so you should only access the app from official channels.
