Freelancers: how to invoice a foreign client

The topic of the invoicing and proof of income is without a doubt one of the biggest challenges of working as a freelancer in Argentina. As you advance on your path as an independent professional and bring in clients from abroad, it’s common for questions to arise, such as: What do I need to be in compliance with ARCA (formerly AFIP)? How do you make an invoice? What invoice do I need to issue?
It may seem like a mess, but don't worry. In this guide, we clear up all your doubts and explain step by step what you need to know to invoice clients in other countries. That said, it’s always recommended to consult with an accountant to make sure you comply with all regulations without surprises.
Invoicing abroad: What do I need to know?
As a freelancer in Argentina, it's essential to demonstrate the legality of your income through invoices or equivalent receipts. It's a tax obligation, and not doing so can bring you problems, such as fines or penalties.
There are different types of invoices you can issue to justify your income. In this case, we'll explain how to make an E invoice, which is the one you'll need to support the income you earn from exporting services; that is, from providing services to foreign clients from Argentina
What is an E invoice?
The E invoice is the receipt you need to invoice services to clients abroad. It is used, for example, to invoice programming, design, writing, or other work carried out from Argentina to other countries
If I'm a monotributista, can I issue an E invoice?
Of course! Both monotributistas and registered taxpayers can issue E invoices. If you're not yet in one of these regimes, you'll first need to register in order to invoice properly.
Requirements to issue an invoice abroad
While you can go to an accounting professional to generate your E invoice, you can also do it yourself through the ARCA website (formerly AFIP). If you have never been registered with ARCA or issued receipts, it is important that you first complete the following steps
1. Register with ARCA
You need to create your personal account, obtain your CUIT and manage your Fiscal Key to access online services.
2. Enroll in Monotributo
You must register in the corresponding taxes (Monotributo regime) in order to invoice abroad.
Don't know what Monotributo is? Don't worry, in this article on our blog we explain what it's about. If you want to see the new categories for this regime, we suggest visiting this other article.
3. Register a point of sale
This is done from the ARCA portal and you can assign it to «Online Receipts» or another enabled system.
Once these steps are completed, you can now invoice foreign clients.
How to issue an E invoice: step by step
Log in with your CUIT and Fiscal Key at services.arca.gob.ar
Register the “Online Receipts” service.
Choose the “generate receipts” option and select E Invoice.
Enter the tax ID of the country you are invoicing and the currency type (pesos, dollars, etc.).
Fill in your invoice details: issue date, items, recipient details, and description of the service you're invoicing. Confirm the operation, and that's it.
Remember that it is essential to be well informed about the requirements and processes to avoid mistakes that could bring you tax complications. While this guide gives you a general overview, each case may have its particularities, so we always recommend consulting with an accountant or specialized professional.
